Former Greensboro city official tapped to lead Gateway Research Park as interim director

GREENSBORO, NC - March 27, 2020 - Gateway Research Park has named former Greensboro City Manager Jim Westmoreland to serve as interim director.  Former director John Merrill stepped down this month after 15 years leading the joint venture between N.C. A&T University and UNC Greensboro.  Westmoreland will assume the role effective Monday, March 30.

Gateway Research Park board chair Dr. Charles McQueary said Westmoreland’s experience makes him “uniquely qualified” for the position.

“Jim’s experience in working on complex public policy, transportation and economic development projects, plus his passion for leading people, teams and organizations, make him uniquely qualified to fill this role.”

Since retiring from his position with the City of Greensboro in 2018, Westmoreland has offered his consulting services to local governments, transportation agencies and private developers.

“I was honored to be asked to serve as the interim executive director of Gateway Research Park.,” Westmoreland said.

“Having been in Greensboro since 1996, and watching the Gateway grow into the world-class research, innovation, and economic development entity it has become today, I look forward to working with the Gateway Board, NC A&T State University, UNCG, and our community to continue to discover the awesome potential of Gateway and its unlimited future.”
